The Very Little Theatre continues its 83rd Season with the uproarious musical comedy
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
March 9-11, 15-17, 22-25, 29-31, 2012
Directed by Chris Pinto
The uproarious award-winning musical comedy and Broadway hit Dirty Rotten Scoundrels opens March 9 at The Very Little Theatre for a four-week run. This is the third show in the VLT’s 83rd Season, with book by Jeffrey Lane, and music and lyrics by David Yazbek.
Based on the popular 1988 film, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers on two con men living on the French Riviera. The first is the suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson, who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. The other, a small-time crook named Freddy Benson, more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health.
After meeting on a train, they unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn’t big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate, wins and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues, that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!
This adaptation of the film comedy (which starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine) earned a whopping eleven TONY nominations in 2005, including Best Musical and Best Score. Both lead actors were nominated against each other for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical: Broadway/TV legend John Lithgow and Norbert Leo Butz in a star-making and ultimately TONY-winning breakout performance.
Director Chris Pinto has a superb cast of experienced musical talent, including Michael P. Watkins as Lawrence Jameson and Tom Wilson as Freddy Benson, the two con men, and Tara Wibrew as Christine Colgate, the young American heiress vacationing on the French Riviera and the target of Lawrence and Freddy's bet. Jennifer Sellers is Muriel, a wealthy socialite and one of Lawrence's victims, Shannon Coltrane is Jolene, an heiress from Oklahoma, and George Comstock is Andre Thibault, Lawrence's French assistant. The other talented performers appearing in the ensemble are: Traci Hash (Renee), Michael Walker (Nikos), Jim Ballard (Lead Dancer), Trevor Eichhorn, Jesse Ferreira, Jennifer Mandeville-Schulz, Carol Massahos, Chris Nordquist, Naomi Ruiz-Todd, Jordan Tunstill, and Ariella Wolfe.
Jim Greenwood is the music director, Gerald Walters is the vocal director, and Michael P. Watkins is the choreographer. Nancy Boyett is the costume designer, and Michael Walker is the set designer.
Reserved seat tickets are $18; Thrifty Thursday (March 15, 22, and 29) prices are $13 and senior citizens may attend the Sunday matinees (March 11 and 25) for $13. The 13 performances are Friday-Sunday, March 9-11; Thursday-Saturday, March 15-17; Thursday-Sunday, March 22-25; and Thursday-Saturday, March 29-31.
